Tornado Hits Long Island Beach Club, Causes Extensive Damage

A waterspout formed off the coast of Long Island on Thursday, August 20, 2026, and made landfall as a tornado in East Atlantic Beach, Nassau County, at approximately 6:45 p.m.
The tornado caused significant damage to beach clubs, including the Silver Point Beach Club and Sun and Surf Beach Club, where cabanas were destroyed, and debris was scattered across the area.

Impact & Risks

The tornado caused extensive property damage, including torn roofs and scattered debris at beach clubs in East Atlantic Beach. Heavy rainfall led to flooding, stranding vehicles and creating hazardous travel conditions in areas such as Cherry Valley Avenue and the West Hempstead Turnpike. Despite the destruction, no casualties or serious injuries were reported. Residents were advised to avoid the affected areas to allow emergency crews to conduct search and recovery operations.
